Our Story

Myakka Music Festival, Inc

Myakka Music Festival grew out of a simple belief: music brings people together. What began as free outdoor concerts in the park behind the old Myakka City Grocery became a grassroots community effort known as the Myakka Moonlighters. During a time when people needed fresh air, safe gathering, and a little joy, local volunteers helped clean up the park, clear branches, mow the grounds, set up the stage area, and welcome musicians to play for the community. The concerts were free to attend. Neighbors came with folding chairs, bug spray, and open hearts. When the music played, we passed the hat to help support the musicians. Some people nearby could even hear the music from their own porches. Over time, those monthly gatherings grew into a larger vision — an annual music celebration rooted in Myakka’s local spirit, neighborly help, and love of live music. After the passing of our friend Dagmar Beavers in 2023, that spirit continued through DagFest, which became part of the path toward what is now Myakka Music Festival. Today, Myakka Music Festival, Inc. is a community nonprofit dedicated to supporting live music, cultural connection, and shared gathering in Myakka.
